Watching A Family Grow ~ Seattle Downtown Waterfront Photographer

I have had the pleasure of photographing this family many, many times. We met at preschool when I was taking Fine Art School Photos and Tatum was just a wee thing. She captured my heart then, and every time she is in front of my camera, she is a joy to photograph. Tatum has always had amazing glasses. I think the first time I met her, she had these awesome blue glasses that happened to match her blue dress. She’s since had many different pairs, each one perfectly suited for her. Tatum calls me Miss Kellie and though I never use the word “cheese” and try to tell the parents of my families to not coach the kids to say cheese, kids still do, and she is one of them. However, a second after she says it, she goes back to being herself, and she will gaze into my lens with bare curiosity. She’s become a muse of sorts for me, because I love the innocence and pureness she exudes. Her little sister is quite the opposite. This happened to be a session to commemorate Kensie’s 2nd birthday. It seems like just yesterday that I was taking maternity photos and her newborn photos! Kensie is always on the go, and she had me running back and forth across the Bell Harbor Conference Center overpass and all around the waterfront near the Great Wheel. I was working hard to get candid shots of her. It’s not unusual for me to “chase” kids around just following their lead, and some of my favorite photos are the result of me running around after kids.

Misty and Justin are also fun to photograph. They have learned to “ignore me” and just play with the girls (as opposed to just looking at the camera). They’re so used to me, Justin was even watching a Cubs game on his phone at one of our sessions when he wasn’t in front of the camera. Since it was a playoff or World Series game, we ended up incorporating that into the session, with both of them checking the score on his phone. This particular session we were up against a few factors, super bright sun, Justin feeling under-the-weather, and an unpredictable 2 year old in a busy place. After playing a bit at the Bell Harbor Conference center steps and exploring that area, we stopped at Starbucks for a little refueling, and then took a few final shots at the waterfront near the aquarium and Great Wheel. I think the session felt a little crazy to Misty since she was managing the girls a bit more than normal since Justin didn’t feel great, but we still ended up with awesome shots.

I am so thankful when my families come back for more photos. I love building relationships and becoming friends with them, and watching their little ones grow before my eyes!

    Long time, no blogs!

It’s been a long while since there’s been any blog action here. Partly because it hasn’t been a priority and there have been a million other things to be done, and partly because I’ve been wanting to re-do my website since before my youngest was born. There was always something that I needed to do whether it was editing a family session, laundry, cooking, volunteering at kids’ schools or actually spending time with my husband. Even if that meant sitting and watching our favorite shows together. I finally got honest with myself and admitted that if I was going to re-do it on my own, it would take a lot of extra late nights and it would keep getting put off. So when I had the chance to work with Kate Densmore on a rebrand and website overhaul, I jumped at the chance.

Kate is widely known for her documentary family photography and she has been an instructor and mentor to hundreds of photographers.I took an online workshop with her in 2016, and then an in-person workshop at the beginning of this year, so I knew I would work well with her. I have also been participating in a collaborative photo blog called The Art of an Ordinary Day. When she spread the word that she was now doing design work, I got really excited!

I’m so thrilled with the outcome of working with Kate. She has been a source of guidance, inspiration, and support in getting work done, and I couldn’t have done this better myself. From a perfectionist, that’s saying a lot! I am planning on this to be a place for me to share photos of the families I have the privilege to work with, and to also share some of the people nearest and dearest to me, my family.

Photography has been a journey for me and I know there is so much more to explore. I hope you come along for the ride! Here are the images I’ve contributed to the collaborative blog so far! And a bonus one that I missed getting in for June’s edition. Oops.

      Tiny Footprints Auction

Well, it’s been a while… as in over a year-while. In that year, I had another baby… and I’ve been doing all sorts of things that being a mom of a 4.5 year old and a 9.5 month old entails. I’ve also been squeezing in photography when time allows. It has been quite the challenge fitting in the demands of being a wife, mother of two, and a part-time photographer. When people ask me how photography is going, I like to say that I’m too busy for my life as it currently is, but not quite busy enough to feel comfortable about using routine childcare to get work completed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I feel so fortunate to spend time with my kids while they’re really little and changing so quickly. I also feel fortunate that my work is something that I love. (I’d just like a little more sleep sometimes, that’s not too big a wish is it?)

The most recent photography adventure I had was taking photos at an auction for the Tiny Footprints Guild. The auction raised over $35,000 for pre-term birth medical research. The guild dedicates funds raised to the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS). They have held silent auctions in years past, but I was so very honored to be the photographer of their very first live auction!

The event had a great turn-out, and the attendees were fun, generous, and mostly willing subjects (a big change from photographing toddlers!). I had a fantastic time watching the excitement as people bid on some great auction items… an autographed Russell Wilson jersey and Pete Carroll football created one of the largest bidding wars of the evening! It felt so good to volunteer my time and services for such an important and under-recognized philanthropy. The Tiny Footprints Guild thanked me at the end of the evening for taking photos, but I felt humbled and thankful to be able to do my small part of a larger purpose.

Here are some highlights from the evening.

Beach Day! | West Seattle Family Photographer

The gorgeous weather that we’ve been having in Seattle has me dreaming of many more beach worthy days this coming spring/summer. It also reminded me of this great mini-session I had at Alki Beach in the fall.

I was lucky to work with this amazing mama in a former life. In that life, I was a senior account manager at a national telecom provider and Sarah was a strategic sales representative. We worked (at what seemed) endless hours on our accounts together. When I left in 2009 to have my daughter, I had a feeling that she wouldn’t be far behind me. I was right, and she had her son about a year after Carli was born. We both happily left the corporate telecom world to be full-time mamas and have barely given a glance back over our shoulders! I feel very lucky to have Sarah’s early support for my photography career, and we met at Alki Beach in West Seattle for some to commemorate R’s 2nd birthday with some family photos. I was especially excited when we lucked out on gorgeous weather in November… in Seattle. (Yes, this blog is for photos taken in November. There will be more OLD sessions posted too.) R was a fun-loving, typical, on-the-go boy, but we did manage to capture a few of his precious nose-scrunch smiles. So cute! I had fun chasing R around the beach and seeing how much he loved being there with his mommy and daddy.

Carli and I just recently had lunch with Sarah and R before they made their big move from Seattle to Boise. It is so bittersweet that they moved away and that is what finally got us together, but I am so happy that we did. Sarah and I are each expecting our second child, so we’re determined to keep in touch and be our own little support group to get through the next crazy chapter of motherhood. 🙂 I wish them the best of luck with their big move to Idaho, and can’t wait to meet their new little girl the next time they’re in town!

Laughter = Love ~ at the Washington Park Arboretum | Seattle Maternity Photographer

Jenn has been a very close friend since college.  We lived across the hall from each other, and I got to know her silliness and fun-loving personality quite well.  Rewind to 6 years ago when Jenn met Nelson, and when I knew that this guy would make her laugh.  All.the.time.  If it’s not his funny faces, it’s his declarations of how Brazil is so much better than America (he’s Brazilian).  With such funny parents, I can’t wait to see how silly their little boy is!

Despite a ton of laughter during our session, I still was able to get these two to be serious for a few moments and captured some of the sweet tenderness that they share with each other.

            Welcome

            I'm Kellie! I'm so glad you're here.

I have been toting my camera almost everywhere since I was a little girl… and my family and friends have learned to ignore it. But usually I don’t mind them ignoring me. Why? Because I try to capture life as it happens. I see “moments”, and I want to help you have those treasured memories to look back on.
